What do I need to apply for a builder’s licence in Victoria?
To apply for a builder’s licence here in Victoria the applications now require you to have the following:
- 3 years’ experience in the licence category you’re looking to obtain
- 3 work history projects that show your experience in the licence category you’re looking to obtain
- 1 technical reference in regards to at least 1 of the projects submitted, who also currently holds a licence in the category you’re looking to obtain.
For the 3 projects you’ll need to provide certain information like permits, plans, and photos of certain stages of the projects submitted.
Other information you’ll need to provide for your application also includes any qualifications you have obtained, photo ID and a police check.
What’s involved in the exam and interview process?
The first exam is a multiple-choice computer test and also some plan reading exercises (depending on the registration category).
The number of questions and timeframe for the multiple-choice computer test varies for each licence category, but the pass rate is a minimum of 70%.
Depending on your qualifications, you may not require a multiple-choice test first and will go straight to the one on one interview with an assessor.
The one on one interview consists of the assessor going through the 3 work history projects you submitted on your application and asking questions about your involvement and also the onsite systems and processes you implemented during the project. There will also be general knowledge questions included about your knowledge of Legislation, Contracts, Business, Codes and Standards.

The whole process went really well and I highly recommend.
Between finishing my diploma of building and construction and applying for my builders license I contacted VBR for one on one sessions.
They quickly worked out my strong and weak points and from there tailored our sessions to my needs.
VBR made it clear from the beginning that I was a priority. Professional, warm and relaxed i can’t recommend them more
Each module is done weekly in class which I found a great way to learn, and then also a great resource to reviseonce I have my interview date booked in.
A lot of the info we learned was relevant in my interview and also mock interviews were done during our sessions which was a good way to become more comfortable leading up to the real thing.
